EDITING EXPERIENCE

My experience as an "editor" is fairly broad. From gaining valuable copy editing experience during my time at The Sheridan Press, to overseeing operations as the editor-in-chief of BYU's The Universe, to reviewing action blogs for online publication as a content editor for Boostability, my editing experience is as diverse as it is deep.

Highlights include:

May 2014-present

Boostability's editing team is responsible for collaborating with nearly 7,000 freelance writers from across the globe to produce action blogs and articles for small businesses from the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

In addition to editing 60+ articles on varying industries daily, I also screen writers' writing samples and applications to determine which writers would make good contributors.

I was named an Employee of the Month in August 2014.

Editing stats for July 2014:

Total articles: 1,294

Daily average: 59

Average editing time: 5.6 minutes/article

Editing stats for August 2014:

Total articles: 1,022

Daily average: 64

Average editing time: 5.79 minutes/article

The editors' interactions with the writers are also subject to a quality assurance system, in which our comments are checked for grammar, tone, professionalism, and helpfulness.

As of Sept. 13, 2014, my average QA score is 3.75, out of a possible 5.

My time as editor of BYU's The Universe was extremely valuable for a variety of reasons. Not only did I have the opportunity to refine my content and copy editing skills, I was able to oversee the weekly production of our print publication.

In doing so, I coordinated a variety of moving parts, from reporters covering developing stories, to photographers supporting those elements, to designers interested in presenting a visually pleasing product.

The following PDFs capture the essence of my time at The Universe.

The Universe

Editor-in-chief

May 2013-April 2014

General Conference takes place twice a year—in April and October. It is always a stressful time for The Universe, as we cover each session and compete with other news outlets online, but we also cover it in print in such a way that it can sit on newstands for a week and still be just as relevant at the end of the week as it was at the beginning.

The March 18-24 edition of The Universe was perhaps the pinnacle of my time at The Universe. Following the announcement of a new university president, the staff mobilized and gathered 12 years worth of material for an edition dedicated to the outgoing university president, Cecil O. Samuelson.

Not only did we put together an overleaf and four-page spread on Samuelson, we also conducted an exclusive interview with incoming university president, Kevin J Worthen.

That same week, we also covered the conclusion of the Utah State legislature.

The Winter Olympics only come around every four years, so we decided to have fun with the Feb. 4-10 edition. The Universe had a particularly good time covering the Winter Olympics, as BYU student Kate Hansen competed for the US in luge.

Year in Review editions were designed to make The Universe staff's lives easier during finals weeks, but generally ended up stressing everyone out more than anything due to the extensive coordination they required between editors, photographers, and designers.
